Bad & Broken Things

April 7th, 2025 at 03:41 am

Been having a rough couple weeks.

A storm ripped part of our roof shingles off while I was out of town. Once we got a contractor up there they said we have a ton of hail damage and the entire roof needs replaced. Half of it was put on in 2012 and other half was put on in 2017. So this was not an expense I was expecting. I had to make an insurance claim but it sounds like my area went to ACV storm coverage last year even though I have "replacement" insurance. So I'm guessing the insurance is only going to cover about 50%. We also have a whole side of damaged siding and 3 broken windows. I'm still waiting on actual numbers from insurance and the roofing quotes. I'm trying not to freak out yet. I'm also trying to submit for the roofing warranty because it's technically still in the coverage period from the shingles but I unfortunately didn't save the receipts. So I kind of doubt they will cover anything.

Now my shower started leaking this week. It's also not very old and was installed correctly. I think it's a material failure and again I submitted a warranty claim (with receipts) so I'm really hoping and praying that they will accept fault and cover something. I'm having a terrible time trying to find any contractors to replace only the leaking floor pan and not rip out the entire huge luxury custom shower which is floor-to-ceiling tile. It looks like I will be doing it myself if the company won't cover it because I can't afford an entire shower replacement that would likely be $10k+.

We switched to using our other shower and the faucet broke *face palm* but Delta is awesome and a new warranty replacement is on the way without much fuss. I also saw a loose floor tile by the tub and I pulled it up and found mold. So now I have to rip more up, clean everything, kill and cover the mold, replace the broken floor and caulk before we can use that bathroom again.

That means 3 different warranty claims in process plus an insurance claim and lots of calls to contractors. I feel like I've done nothing but argue on the phone and send information and pictures for the last week. Crazy! I think I've only had to make one other warranty claim on anything ever.

My car is also shifting hard and I'm scared the transmission is going out.

I've been sick with worry and anxiety, not sleeping, and now I also have a cold. We have spent the last decade saving as much as we meagerly can so that someday we can replace our badly needed septic or repair our sagging foundation and get AC and if we have to cover a roof, car, or shower replacement that will eat up literally everything we have saved.

There are no big income changes coming in our future and everything continues to get more and more expensive. Some days I just feel like we are so close to drowning or at the very least only treading water and never ever going to get ahead. We budget all our money, don't have debt, live as frugal as we can and we still struggle every day. I don't know how anyone can afford to live comfortably. We are more poor than ever despite making more than ever.

Honestly, I kind of hope a recession will reset everything. It sucks, but it's not like I'm living great now. Maybe things need to bottom out and start over.

Wow. When it rains, it pours, or hails in your case.

I am worried that you are worried. I mean, it's going to affect your sleep and being able to recover from a cold.

Despite the paperwork, it's good that you do have insurance coverage for everything.

I hope you have a speedy recovery from all this.

I'm so sorry you are going through so much. Good on the warranty stuff and good you are that organized. It concerns me that you are losing sleep. Please, please, please take care of yourself and get rest and eat well and try to find some positives in a world of negatives. You are Midwestern stock! You are strong and smart! (I'm Midwestern too...so have to cheer for you!)

I am so sorry to hear you are going through so much. At least you know you are doing your best to mitigate the damage. Your best is all you can do. Please take care of yourself. You will get through this.

Did the roofer who told you that you had lots of storm damage take photos to show you? I once had a roofer who claimed ally the plywood sheathing on my roof was rotted and would need to be replaced, but a subsequent roofer who went up to look at it said it was just 1 board that needed replacing. Crooked contractors everywhere
