And Life Laughs...

December 28th, 2018 at 12:24 am

My last post was about how I felt so financially secure... And then the boom dropped.

My husband had severe stomach pain all day yesterday and finally went to the ER. He had an appendicitis and had to have an emergency appendectomy today... Thankfully we caught it before it ruptured, and the surgery went well. He is very tired and sore but home now resting.

The bad news. He is off work for 3 weeks. Frown Thankfully his work was very nice and understanding. I have already submitted a claim for short term disability which would pay him 70% of his base pay. BUT he has only worked there a little over 3 months so we aren't sure if he qualifies yet. We have to wait a week to receive the packet and then submit more forms, etc. Could be a while before we even know something. I do know he doesn't qualify for FML (you have to work a year). So I am a little scared he could lose his job, although his boss didn't indicate that.

Besides just his normal missing pay, this week was Christmas and he was off 2 days. Which was supposed to be a paid holiday, but per the employee rules you have to work at least one day in the holiday week to get paid. And now since he is off work he won't qualify for Christmas, or New Years either. On top of that he was supposed to be working 12 hour days these two weeks, and also Saturdays. So I don't even want to think about the amount of money we are going to be missing.

Major bummer. I know we will be okay. We always are. But it just stinks that instead of paying a large chunk of debt off, now we are going to be scrambling just to pay our bulls. I am very thankful we are in as good as a position as we are.

Hoping and praying that he doesn't lose his job, and that STD goes through so we can at least squeak by for the next 3 weeks. I would appreciate it if you kept us in your thoughts and prayers. Thanks!

I don't think he could lose his job for having appendicitis. They may get around paying him, but you can recover from a few weeks of lost income. It's very good that his appendix did not rupture. I went through that, and I was off of work for six or eight weeks -- I can't remember now -- and, of course, I was very sick. Be sure you keep all medical records well organized, because employers can be very stinky about "proving" an illness, even when it's so patently obvious.

I hope he is feeling better soon.

CB I know recently another employee was pending termination, depending on FML. But he was taking off 12 weeks for the birth of his child. So it's a bit different. I would think a medical emergency is not something you could lose your job for, but you never know.

I am skeptical we will get short term disability, and if we do it could be weeks or more before we receive anything, so I definitely don't want to count on that, although it would be nice.

After doing some money shifting, and cutting out all extras I've got our must have dollar amount down to $1,000 of missing income for 3 weeks off. Since I was planning on paying $800 to the credit card, I'll just swipe that, and the rest I should be able to scrounge up from my paychecks. Husband will still receive a paycheck tomorrow, with some overtime on it, so hopefully we can put that back as well.

Like you said, we will recover from some lost income. I'm just glad he is okay and it wasn't worse.

I cannot imagine that he would lose his job. Isn't there a written policy about illness and emergencies? He will probably need a release from his doctor to return to work, but I would think a chat with the labor board in your state. At least he came through surgery well and is on the mend.

Yes, life happens and it is how you navigate the bumps that makes all the difference. I always say hope for the best but plan for the worst.
